Sabri Zain's Freshwater Protozoa of north
        Cambridgeshire

Specimen 093

A very small specimen of Amoeba proteus. This particular amoeba is stationary and extending its pseudopods very slowly very slowly - probably in search of food or to search for other amoebas to communicate with. Amoebas are social creatures that can communicate with one another using chemicals. To do this, an amoeba will extend a pseudopod toward another cell and release a chemical signal. The other cell can then respond by extending its own pseudopod in the direction of the signal.
