Thalassionema are a genus of phytoplankton belonging to the pennate diatom group. Their cells are straight and linear, rectangular shaped, with rounded ends, and the cells connected at the ends of each other to form colonies in the form of zigzagging chains or radiating stellate structures. The cells attach together by mucilage pads at their ends.
