Sabri Zain's Freshwater Protozoa of north Cambridgeshire

Specimen 075

Vorticella is a genus of bell-shaped ciliates that can be free-swimming but also have stalks to attach themselves to substrates or, as evident in this video, even larger organisms such as this Daphnia (a microscopic crustacean). Vorticella has been found as an epibiont (attached to the surface of a living substratum when in its sessile stage) of crustaceans, the basibiont. This relationship between the epibiont and basibiont is called epibiosis.  Epibiosis is the relationship between two organisms in which one grows on the other but is not parasitic on it.
