A fascinating video showing a paramecium feeding and later having a poo, excreting the waste from its cell body (at the 40-second mark and near the end of the video as well). Food particles becomes engulfed by the cell’s membrane and stored in sac-like vacuoles in the cytoplasm. The vacuole with the food particle is called a phagosome. Enzymes then digest the food for use in the cell. Once all the nutrients in the food particles are in the vacuole are digested, any waste material is ejected from the cell. This process is called exocytosis. |
