Like courting swans, two Lacrymaria olor ciliates dancing a 'pas de deux', with one gliding and twirling playfully around the other as it gracefully darts it neck around the water looking for food. The ciliate is a teardrop-shaped cell with a small "head" at the end of a long slender "neck" and its name means "swan tear" in Latin. Found in lake water samples from Ferry Lagoon in Fen Dryton Lakes Nature Reserve. |
