Sabri Zain's Freshwater Protozoa of north Cambridgeshire

Specimen 064

Lacrymaria olor is a species of ciliates, typically 0.10 mm long, that is found in freshwater ponds. It is a teardrop-shaped cell with a small "head" at the end of a long slender "neck" - its name means "swan tear" in Latin. But what a neck that is - Lacrymaria orio is notable for its ability to extend that 'neck' to 7 times its body length, and manipulate it in many directions — even around obstacles — in order to capture its food. In this video, you can see its body acnhored to some organic material while its neck strteches out in all directions grabbinf juicy morsels to eat.
