Pinnularia is a  fresh-water algae, usually found in ponds and moist soil. They are diatoms -  photosynthesising algae that have a siliceous skeleton (frustule). In girdle/band view, it is rectangular in shape,  and cigar or boat shaped in valve/surface view.  A large central vacuole is present with the nucleus suspended in its centre by a transverse cytoplasmic bridge. Two golden-brown chloroplasts are present along the sides of the cells.
