Sabri Zain's Freshwater Protozoa of north Cambridgeshire

Specimen 056

Euglena is a photosynthetic microbe, which explains its beautiful jade green colour. The cells are cylindrical with a rounded anterior and tapered posterior. The chloroplasts are well-developed, bright green, and sometimes have pyrenoids. They are often discoidal in shape but, as you can see from this video, can also be ovate, lobate, elongate, U-shaped, or ribbon-shaped. Euglena has one long, protruding flagellum and a shorter flagellum that is not usually visible.
