Because of their distinctive shape and crystal-like texture, diatoms have always reminded me of extra-terrestrial flying saucers. Here are some Stauroneis phoenicenteron diatoms which we we found in a water sample from Kingfisher pond in Northstowe and, in this video, you'll see these microbial flying saucers gliding through the vast expanse of an alien micro-cosmos of microbial stars, planets and nebulae.
