A short video showing the phytoplankton Skeletonema from sea water samples we collected during a weekend trip to Felixstowe Ferry in Suffolk. Skeletonema spp. gets its name because it looks like a backbone or spine—part of a human skeleton. This long, slender diatom is actually a chain of individuals, kind of like a ladder. Linking up into chains like this allows phytoplankton to share their energy. |
