A short video of the ciliate Colpoda inflata which we had observed in a water sample from Ferry Lagoon in Fen Drayton. At first sight, we thought it was an amoeba, due to the way it glided out of the organic mass it was hiding in, changing shape as it moved. However, it did not seem to have the amoeba's pseudopods and we then noticed it was covered in wriggling hair-like organelles, making it clear that it was a ciliate rather than ameoba. Its movement was also characteristic of Colpodea, alternating between gliding smoothly and then circling rapidly in one spot, spinning the many food vacuoles inside it. |
