Hail Hydra! Hydra oligactis, also known as the brown hydra, is a species of Hydra. Because Hydras can re-grow detached parts of their bodies, they are named after the hydras from Greek mythology - nine-headed monsters that could grow two new heads for each head that was cut off. The Hydra has long, finger-like tentacles growing around its mouth opening and uses these tentacles to extend and reach out to prey, stinging and paralyzing them. It eats small insects, worms and crustaceans - that bulge in the stomach you see in the video in fact looks like a small Daphnia he'd eaten earlier. |
