Amoeba proteus, one of the larger amoeba species. At the beginning of the video, you can see a small paramecium on the left get swallowed up by the amoeba's cytoplasm, wriggling in vain as it is later trapped in a round vacuole on the lower left part of its 'body'. As the video progresses, the unfortunate paramecium is eventually broken down by enzymes and consumed by the amoeba. Note also how the darker nucleus of the amoeba flows all around the cytoplasm and how its uses its extensions (called pseudopodia) to move. This recording was made using our microscope's 4X objective lens and, due to the slowness of its movement, at ten times normal speed. |
