Hedera helix

Location: Grantchester Meadows, Cambridgeshire

Hedera helix, commonly known as English Ivy or Common Ivy, is an evergreen climbing plant native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa.

Ornamental value: English Ivy is a popular ornamental plant due to its attractive, glossy green leaves and vigorous growth habit. It can be used as a ground cover, a climbing vine to cover walls and fences, or in hanging baskets and containers. Many cultivars with different leaf shapes, sizes, and variegation patterns are available for garden use.

Erosion control: H. helix can help prevent soil erosion, particularly on slopes or banks, thanks to its dense, extensive root system.

Building insulation: When grown on building walls, English Ivy can help insulate the structure by providing a layer of air between the wall and the plant, reducing heat loss in winter and helping to keep the building cool in summer.

Air purification: Studies have shown that H. helix can help remove airborne pollutants, such as particulate matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), improving indoor air quality when grown as a houseplant.

However, it is essential to note that H. helix can become invasive in some regions, outcompeting native plants and even damaging structures with its strong roots and vigorous growth. .
